Your Guide to Bathroom Selections

Your Guide to Bathroom Selections

Bring your look together, one choice at a time.

You’ve saved the bathroom inspiration. You have a few favourite tiles. And you’re already picturing that first shower in your beautiful new space.

Now comes the part where you turn those ideas into actual selections.

From your vanity and tiles to the shower mixer and towel hooks, there are quite a few decisions to make. Choosing them together helps create a bathroom that looks considered, works for your everyday routine and feels like you.

Here’s where to start, what to keep in mind and a few finishing touches you’ll be glad you remembered.

1. Start with your space and how you use it

Before falling in love with a particular product, get clear on what your bathroom needs to do.

Is it a busy family bathroom? An ensuite shared by two? A compact powder room where you can have a little more fun with the finishes?

Think about storage, your daily routine and the features you’d love to include. Then check your plans and measurements so you know what you’re working with.

It also helps to set a product budget, separate from installation and building costs. That gives you a clearer picture of where to invest and where to keep things simple.

2. Choose the pieces that shape your layout

Your vanity, shower, toilet and bath need to fit comfortably within the room, with enough space to move around and use them.

Start with these larger pieces before getting into the smaller details.

For your vanity, consider the width, depth, storage and how drawers or doors will open. A beautiful vanity becomes even better when there’s somewhere for everything you use each morning.

If you’re including a bath, check its dimensions and discuss placement and plumbing with your trades. The same goes for your toilet and shower configuration.

Our tip: check the dimensions of the actual products you’re considering. Two products that look similar online can take up quite different amounts of space.

3. Select your vanity, basin and tapware together

These three pieces work closely together, so it makes sense to choose them as a group.

An above-counter basin changes the overall height of your vanity setup. A wall-mounted mixer needs the right reach and placement for the basin beneath it. A bench-mounted mixer needs suitable space and provision in the benchtop.

Think about how the combination will feel to use, as well as how it looks.

Before plumbing rough-in, confirm your basin and tapware selections with your plumber so they can check the installation requirements.

4. Build your tile palette

Tiles set the mood for the whole bathroom.

Soft stone looks can create a calm backdrop. Colour and texture bring personality. A feature tile behind the vanity or inside the shower can give the room that little something extra.

Start with one tile you love, then choose the other finishes around it.

Consider:

  • Your floor and wall tiles.

  • Where you’d like a feature tile.

  • How far up the walls you’ll tile.

  • Tile size and laying pattern.

  • Grout colour.

  • How tiles will meet at corners, niches and edges.

Ask our team about tiles suitable for each area, and confirm quantities and layout with your tiler before ordering.

Our tip: put your tile samples beside your vanity finish and tapware. Seeing them together makes it much easier to decide whether the combination feels right.

5. Bring your tapware and accessories into the picture

Your basin mixer, shower fittings and accessories are a chance to carry a consistent finish through the room.

Brushed gold adds warmth. Chrome keeps things crisp. Brushed nickel offers a softer metallic finish. Choose something you love alongside your tiles and cabinetry.

Once you’ve picked your finish, work through each area of the bathroom:

  • Basin tapware.

  • Shower head, hand shower and mixer.

  • Bath tapware, if needed.

  • Towel rails and hand towel holders.

  • Robe hooks.

  • Toilet roll holder.

  • Wastes and drains in suitable coordinating finishes.

6. Make room for the everyday details

A bathroom can look beautiful in a photo, but the little practical choices are what make it enjoyable to use.

Will a mirror cabinet give you extra storage? Where will your towels hang? Can you reach the shower mixer comfortably? Is the niche tall enough for your favourite shampoo?

Discuss lighting, ventilation and power requirements with your relevant trades, too. These decisions are much easier to plan before the room is finished.

Our tip: picture yourself getting ready in the space. Walking through your morning routine can help you spot something missing from the plan.

7. Check the full list before ordering

Once your selections are coming together, take a moment to review the whole bathroom.

Check product names, sizes, finishes and quantities. Confirm what is included with each item and what needs to be purchased separately, such as basin wastes, installation components or additional accessories.

Ask about availability and lead times, then coordinate delivery with your project schedule.

Share the final product specifications with your builder, plumber and tiler so everyone is working from the same selections.
